Volleyball and Tornadoes

As happens often in this part of the country, we had a little severe weather come in tonight. Of course, it waited until we were at school for Hannah's first round of the volleyball tournament. We arrive at St. Aloysius and are checking out the brand new playground equipment when we hear it ... the dreaded thunder. I swear Lucy has extremely sensitive hearing because she was the first to say, "What's that Mommy?" To which I had to reply, "It's only a little thunder, Luc." Not one to care for any weather that's not sunny and safe, she asked to go in to the game (which hadn't started yet). (This from my child who woke me up at 4:25 this morning because she could hear the rain pitter-pattering outside. It really was only a little rain - no thunder or anything - but she couldn't sleep. So up I went to close her window.)
Once we got into the "safety" of the gym, it was determined that since the sirens had started blaring, we "might oughta" get into the hall. It brought me back to childhood and those fun tornado drills, where you file into the hall and put your head between your knees. It was determined that maybe we all ought to head home since the storm was heading our direction. So off we all file to our cars. We drove separate cars, so Michael took the kids and I stopped to say "hi" to a friend before heading out. On my way to my car, the coach's wife yells, "Where's Hannah?" to which I reply, "On her way home with Michael" to which she informs me that indeed, in the past 5 minutes, someone determined we ARE going to play the game.
Thank goodness for cell phones. I dial up Michael, he brings her back, takes the little ones home to head to the basement and Hannah and I stay at school to enjoy a little volleyball during a tornado warning. By the way, it all worked out. St. Al won in 2 games, the rotating clouds that were over Pewee Valley didn't turn into a tornado and all was safe in our little corner of the world.

Lucy's Big Day

Yesterday, I picked up the girls from school. Lucy was very perky getting into the car and started talking right away. She usually needs some down time right after school. Anyway, she starts into a story about how she was in class and everyone was talking and she raised her hand and put her hands to her lips to signify quiet. Apparently, this is how the teachers get everyone to quiet down. Well, Ms. Lucas decided that Lucy took initiative and awarded her a Peacebuilder's note. Lucy was so happy with herself! She even said, "I am so proud of myself, Mommy." This affected the rest of the day. She came straight home and hopped up to do her homework, taking extra time to write neatly. She even cleaned up her craft mess without me asking her to (alleluia!).
Last night was the St. Al fundraiser night at Max & Erma's so we had planned to go there for dinner. When Michael found out about Lucy's award, he told her she could get ice cream after dinner (even though they always get ice cream there!). To that she replied, "This is the best day ever, Mom, and it started when I got that note!" It is amazing what a little recognition will do for a 6 year old!
